Cemetery Records

The Middle Spring Presbyterian Church has four cemeteries with entombments dating back to 1738.  These records have been included in the attached Microsoft Excel 95 Spreadsheet and can be downloaded to your PC for viewing and searching.   The spreadsheet contains columns for first and last names, birthdates, date of passing, location (which of the four cemeteries, UMS = upper cemetery; LMS = lower, and NMS = the cemetery currently in use, and H=Hannas), and notes.  You can download the file by selecting the icon below.

While you may open up the spreadsheet the listing below is more complete and up-to-date. Scroll down. After some introductory material the list is alphabetically arranged. Thanks to John and Betty Carson.

PA 135 Middle Spring Road, www.middlespringpc.org There are three cemeteries at the church as well as the one called Hanna, which is across the river and has been done previously. Shippensburg Historical Society recorded these stones in 1981. Their data is NOT included in this document. Betty Carson filmed these stones in August 2005. I have used material from: The book “ History of Middle Spring Presbyterian Church” by Belle McK. H. Swope, published in 1900, The churches website cemetery chart website //members.fortunecity.com/kgoofy7/d104.htm [some Maclay data] Kay King’s website: http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~cemphoto/pa/cumberland/ southampton/mspc/mspc.html, [data on Brackenridge and Maclay and pictures of many Maclay, Brackendidge and other stones.] The three on-site cemeteries are designated as LMS, Lower Middle Spring, which is the oldest cemetery, across the road from the church UMS which is the one beside the church, also enclosed with a stone wall NMS which is the newest one. There are several monuments in front of the church, honoring soldiers from various wars and several monuments honoring the previous Rectors. Inscriptions of these are at the end of the document. Material in brackets was not on the stone, either comments by me or additional material from obits or the other websites. SSDI means data from Social SecurityDeath Index, obit means from obituary. Maiden names are cross referenced In the preface to Belle Swope’s book, she says over 7000 persons reportedly have been buried here, and this was in 1900. If that is true, there are more unmarked graves than marked ones. Dick and Shirley Weller have been especially helpful with this work. Names of the living have been removed to protect the living. In some cases, new stones have been made with less data, if the old stones are still there, they are also listed.
